When the wolves first journeyed to Amor Valley, the herds rebelled against their presence. The herds refused to share territory with killers and thus decided to force the wolf packs from their land. Rallying together, the herds went to war with the wolves. They were surprised to find the wolves to be stronger and fiercer than they appeared. Sheer size alone could not bring victory to the horse herds and within the first year many fell to the fangs and claws of the newcomers. The wolves for their part went after the equines with a lust for vengence with each wolf that fell dead at wolf hooves. For each wolf that died, two horses would die in return until the herds, once four mighty families of old, were rendered leaderless with their numbers dwindling. Mares refused to foal just so their leaders could have soldiers and thus, this brought about the end of the first war.
The last equine leader, Sundancer, went to the wolves and conceded defeat. As punishment the wolves killed Sundancer, the last original herd leader from the original four herds that started the war. With Sundancer dead, the herds were in disarray and conceded to exile. Together the wolf packs herded the remaining equines south, giving them less than half of the territory. Where the eastern, western and northern herds had once roamed, wolf packs established in their place while the four herds were left to the south.
Now, generations later, unrest is rising again among the horses. Their numbers have reestablished and their herds are becoming too big for their borders. They demand more room but there is a divide. Some are too afraid to fight the wolves again while others say they should die fighting rather than die as cowards obeying lowly mutts.
